Domaine Roger Belland, Santenay
Background
We started working with Roger Belland and his daughter Julie in 1998, making them one of the newest additions to our Burgundy portfolio. They represent the 5th and 6th generation to be making wine at the domaine, which is one of the largest properties south of Beaune. Their estate includes a monopole (100% ownership) in one of the best exposed corners of Chassagne Morgeot, the Clos Pitois, and they are also the proud owners of the largest holding in Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet.
Size: 23 hectares of vines, situated on the finest 1er and grand cru vineyards in Maranges, Chassagne Montrachet, Puligny Montrachet, Meursault, Volnay and Pommard.
| Soil type: | stone, clay and limestone. |
| Vine age: | vines planted between 1947 and 1996. |
| Yields: | 40hl/ha for the red wines and 45hl/ha for the white wines. |
| Annual production: | 90,700 bottles. |
Viticultural and vinification methods
Grasses are planted between vines to enable the domaine to suppress the use of chemical weed killers, and help combat the problem of erosion. Harvest is always done by hand.
They employ a very traditional wine making process, with white wines spending 8-12 months in barrel, and reds aging for 12-18 months. The amount of new oak is 20-100%, depending on the cuvée.
