Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg (Marie-Andrée & Marie-Christine Mugneret), Vosne-Romanée
Background The Domaine's history is relatively complicated. It was created in 1933 following the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Their son, Georges, an opthamologist by profession, expanded the estate with shrewd purchases of Clos de Vougeot, Ruchottes-Chambertin and various premier crus. Following his death, his two daughters, Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée Mugneret, who both studied oenology, took over the business alongside their mother.
Although the Domaine is run by women they are loathe to hear the word 'feminine' to describe their Pinot Noir. In an article by Jancis Robinson Marie Andrée says 'First, we respect Pinot Noir, its finesse and delicacy -expressive, that's what our wines are.' 'An iron hand in a velvet glove - you know that expression?' 'We respect terroir.'
The wines are divided between Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg, the vineyards of which are maintained by sharecroppers so the domaine does not receive all the fruit and Domaine Georges Mugneret which are maintained directly.
Size: 6ha
| Annual: | 32,000 bottles |
Viticultural and vinification methods The wines are sorted, de-stemmed and cold macerated for 4-5 days. Alcoholic fermentation then takes place over 10 days or so. The wines are aged in oak for 18 months (10% new for the villages wines and up to 70% for Grand Cru) and racked periodically (on Saturdays by their husbands)
