Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Château de Chambolle-Musigny

Background The Château de Chambolle has been in the family since 1863. Frédéric Mugnier has been in charge since 1985, changing his career from one in oil back to the family business of wine. In 2003 the Clos de Maréchale vineyard was returned after a 53 year lease. This increased the estate more than threefold as the Maréchale standing at 9.76 ha is the largest monople in the Cote d'Or.

Frédéric has re-introduced Chardonnay to the Maréchale site, after tasting a bottle from 1943 which was in great condition. He has done this by grafting the Chardonnay onto old Pinot Noir vines. It is intensive, meticulous work for the first year but Frédéric believes the sacrifice will be worth it.

Size: 13.63ha in total

Vine age: Maréchale vines average 48years

Viticultural and vinification methods Work in the vineyard is all done manually. No herbicides are used and the vineyard is nearly completely organic. The grapes are sorted meticulously and de-stemmed. New oak is kept to a minimum, around 20% and only lightly toasted. No fining or filtration.
