Domaine de Courcel, Pommard
Background A family estate since the 16th century set exclusively within Pommard - one of Pommard's grandest domaines. Owned by Gilles de Courcel and his three sisters, the winemaker since 1996 is Yves Confuron Cotetidot. Under Yves' control the Domaine has earned a magnificent 5 stars in the 2008 Bettane & Desseauve guide - only six other Burgundy domaines scored as highly.
It is often said that both Rugiens and Clos des Epenots should be Grand Cru and that it is only a matter of time....
Size: 8ha
| Soil type: | Limestone bedrock |
| Vine age: | average 45 years old, some over 60 |
Viticultural and vinification methods The grapes are vigourously sorted and vinified with stems. The wine is matured in barrel for 18 months. There is a restrained use of new wood (15%)The wines are not racked.
The cellar is kept very cold and therefore malo-lactic fermentation take longer than other cellars (up to 6-12 months longer) and so the wines are more backward and take a little longer to come round.
