O.W Loeb & Company Ltd -Chateau Rayas

Château Rayas (Emmanuel Reynaud), Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This 10 ha property was originally bought in 1880 by Albert Reynaud, an Avignon based lawyer who needed to find a new career at age 45 when he became deaf. However it was Albert's  eccentric son Louis who really put Rayas on the map producing a string of magnificent vintages through the 40's, 50's and 60's. Louis had no regard for regulations and labelled his wonderful creations '1er Grand Cru' and those from the adjoining Pignan vineyard simply 'Grand Cru' (despite these terms being illegal under Chateauneuf rules). Louis went on to buy the extraordinary Chateu de Fonsalette property in 1945 (40km north of Chateauneuf at Lagarde-Paréol and are simple Côtes-du-Rhône in name only.) Louis died in 1978 nad the baton passed on to his equally eccentric son Jacques. Jacques did a splendid job maintaining Rayas's reputation for producing great and wholly unique wines.Jacques never married and when he suddenly died in January 1997 the great burden of responsibility for this now world-famous property passed to his nephew Emmanuel from Chateau de Tours in Vacqueyras. In recent vintages Emmanuel has settled to the task and is producing classic Rayas and Fonsalette wines.

O W Loeb are proud to have been sole direct UK importers since 1960 of this legendary property.
