Domaine Bruno Clavelier, Vosne-Romanée *organic -certified
Background A first class rugby player who took over from his maternal grandfather in the late 80's, Bruno is something of a renaissance man. As part of his métier of vigneron he has accumulated enormous knowledge of geology, climate and micro-climates, types of grass (for growing between the vines, the sex lives of harmful bugs (so that he can confuse them with pheromones), the oak forests of France (for barrels and suitability to his wines) and more.
All growers interest themselves in such matters to a certain degree but Bruno digs deep. Unsurprisingly, the wines have a strong sense of terroir.
He makes wine biodynamically and holds organic certification.
Size: 6.5ha
| Vine age: | Various -for example Brûlée - vines planted in 1920's Beaux Monts vines are 55 years old |
Viticultural and vinification methods Most of the crop is de-stemmed but he retains between 5 and 20% of whole bunches depending on the vintage. New oak is used sparingly and manipulation in the cellar kept to a minimum. Bruno likes his wines to speak of their origins and normally they need a few years in bottle to enable them to do so fluently.
