O W Loeb are delighted with our foray into the ever-more popular world of Austrian wine and their unique Grüner Veltliner grape variety.

Austrian wine has improved dramatically since its adulteration scandals in the 1980's. In 2002 Jancis Robinson held a tasting judged by 39 international wine tasters and critics pitching Gruner Veltliner up against some of the world's best Chardonnays. The stunning result was that 6 Gruner Veltliners were in the top 8 placings.

Gruner Veltliner with its good body structure, weight and alcohol make it a serious food matching wine.  If you add in ageing potential (Stift Goettweig recently arranged a tasting with some wines which were holding up well from 1974,1978 and 1984 - not to mention their older Rieslings) we have a truly noble variety on our hands.

“ I learned my Moselle at Dr. Loeb’s knee. All London used to vie for invitations to his annual tasting at Charing Cross. Am I the only survivor? No thank goodness! O.W.L. sails on – standards intact”
