Domaine de la Croix Senaillet

Davayé

Stephane & Richard Martin

Size: 22 hectares, 17 of which are in St Véran

History: The Domaine was founded by Maurice Martin, in 1969, and for the first five years Maurice sold his juice off in bulk. In 1974 he began bottling his own production, and the reputation of the estate took off. Maurice’s two sons, Richard and Stéphane, took over in 1992, and have recently undertaken a huge investment programme that reflects the success of the estate.

Style: together with a generic Macon and delicious basic Saint-Véran, Richard also produces a single vineyard wine which reflects perfectly its terroir and site. Les Rochats comes from the chalky soils of the lower slopes of Solutré. The old vines here ensure plenty of complexity and vivacity and make for a wonderful food wine that has the ability to age nicely over five years.

Methods: In the vineyard, treatments are organic, and harvesting is a mixture of hand and mechanical harvesting, depending on the plot. Grape selection is made in the vineyards and in the cellar, and both fermentation and maturation takes place in tank.

Vineyards: The estate’s vineyards are spread over the commune of Davayé in the southern Maconnais and divided into 40 plots. Soils are stony, chalk and clay, slopes are gentle and south easterly facing.
Mâcon Blanc
Saint-Véran: there are 25 plots spread over the village on the chalky, rocky soils typical of the region. The variety of plots gives flexibility and complexity in blending. The vines are an average of 30 years old.
