Domaine de Courcel

Pommard

Yves Confuron

Size: 9 hectares

History: This estate has been in the hands of the de Courcel family since the 16th century, its 9 hectares situated entirely within the commune of Pommard and comprising some of its finest premier cru sites. For four centuries, the estate has focussed on producing wines typical of the Pommard appellation, wines of supreme structure and great finesse. In 1996, Gilles de Courcel decided to appoint Yves Confuron from Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot in Vosne Romanée as winemaker, not in any way to alter the estate’s style, but rather to enhance the individual character of each of the vineyards’ terroirs. To this end, Yves has introduced many new if traditional practices, such as ploughing the soils, strict selection in the vineyard, a longer vinification process and longer élevage, lasting from 18 to 24 months, depending on the wine.

Style: the de Courcel style is very different to that of the wines at Confuron-Cotetidot. These Pommards have more immediacy and a silky feel to them, though they do not lack power and structure, whilst the wines from Vosne are more backward and need longer cellaring. When young, the Grand Clos des Epenots is expressive and appealing, whilst Les Rugiens is dense and brooding. Both Les Fremiers and Les Croix Noires are made for slightly earlier drinking, whilst the top two are maturing.

Vineyards:
Grand Clos des Epenots 1er cru: 4.82ha. It is a monopole, the largest holding at the domaine and vying for attention with Les Rugiens, generally considered the top vineyard in the village.  The soil is clay and limestone with plenty of pebbles, providing excellent drainage, and the vines are an average of 60 years old.
Les Rugiens 1er cru: 1.07ha, lying on the opposite side of the village of Pommard, going towards Volnay. The vineyards are steeply sloping, which naturally controls the vigour of the vines. Considered the finest vineyard in Pommard.
Les Fremiers 1er cru: 0.65ha,  lying next door to the Fremiets of Volnay and below Les Rugiens, on a deeper soil of clay and limestone, richer in clay than the Epenots. The wines are earlier drinking than Grand Clos des Epenots and Rugiens.
Les Croix Noires 1er cru: 0.58ha, lying beneath Les Rugiens and close to Les Fremiers with similar soil ie deep, clay and limestone blend. As with Les Fremiers, these wines are made to be drunk in the mid-term.
Les Vaumuriens Villages: 0.35ha, lying just above Les Rugiens in a prime position on the crest of the hil, with marly soils, and its wines put many other 1ers Crus to shame.
Bourgogne Blanc: 0.58ha.
Bourgogne Rouge: 0.7ha in two plots. The wine produced is consistently one of the best of its kind.
