Domaine Hervé Arlaud Père & Fils
Morey-St-Denis

Cyprien & Hervé Arlaud

Size: 15 hectares

History: The Domaine was established in 1949 by Joseph Arlaud, who was joined in 1984 by his son, Hervé. Joseph’s grandson, Cyprien, joined the domaine in 1996, having just finished viticultural studies in Dijon and took over full responsibility for winemaking 2 years later, after spending time at the Gibbston Valley Winery in Central Otago, New Zealand and Hamilton Russell, South Africa. His impact really became apparent from the 1999 vintage onwards, a real watershed vintage for this domaine. In 2003, he was joined by younger brother, Romain, and, in 2004, work was completed on a stunning new gravity-fed cuverie in Morey St Denis, far more practical than the original 16th century cellar in Nuits St Georges. In 2005, the estate took over several new and exciting vineyards, all of which proves that this estate is really on the move and one to watch.

Methods: Cyprien injects a more cosmopolitan take on winemaking issues, particularly after his time in New Zealand and South Africa. His aim is to improve but not radically alter the estate’s wines, via careful attention in the vineyards and organic methods. In 1998 he ended the use of chemical fertilisers and weedkillers, and began a move to biodyamism in 2003. The entire estate is now fully biodynamic.

Style: The Domaine’s estate includes three Grands Crus, but even the more humble wines show inordinate amounts of class. The wines are known for their early accessibility, opulence and intense fruitiness, but Cyprien has brought greater concentration and structure to the range, meaning that they are also worthy of long-term cellaring these days. The village ‘Roncevie’ comes from a vineyard surrounded by Gevrey Chambertin vines, and it does have a lot of power and class for a red Bourgogne. The three 1er Cru Morey St Denis’ differ in style, reflecting their terroir: Ruchots is lush and fine (it lies on the border with Chambolle Musigny), Chéseaux is much more masculine, while Les Millandes is somewhere in between.

Vineyards:
Bourgogne Roncevie: 5 hectares. The climat Roncevie is classified 50% Gevrey-Chambertin, 50% Bourgogne. Unluckily for Arlaud, but luckily for us, all of their 5 hectares are Bourgogne!
