Both Giants Steps in the Yarra Valley and Crawford River further south in Henty Western Victoria share a common philosophy of exploiting their cool climates to produce complex, ageworthy wines that have a sense of place or "terroir" as it would be refered to in France. Phil Sexton at Giant Steps produces exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz, but he also makes his Innocent Bystander range of wines at the winery in Healesville from bought in grapes. At Crawford River, John Thomson alongside his winemaker daughter Belinda, make one of Australia's finest Rieslings from their complex soils as well as very fine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blends. |
